Funding News.  Our application to the Big Lottery Reaching Communities fund has been successful and after many months of crossing the T's and dotting the I's we have finally gained permission to commence the drawdown, so much of the major work to allow this project to now complete has commenced. To enable us to fully fund not only the building but also the equipment we have also had to make further funding applications with the largest of these to Leader 5 also being successful, which means that after 15 years of trying we can proudly announce that this historic building will open it's doors once again, fully refurbished, in 2019 (date yet to be finalised).

Huge thanks to all the volunteers that have put so much effort into this project over the years and now we turn our efforts towards finding suitable volunteers to help us run the building once re-opened.

Latest renovation news. As anyone who has recently visited Torrington town centre can see, the Town Hall is starting to look transformed. The undercroft area has been renovated and glazed, the adjacent former Townlands office has had the bay removed and the original arch glazed to match and these two spaces have now been opened up into a single spacious area. A ground floor disabled toilet has been installed to allow the undercroft area to be opened for community events where possible. Since our recent further funding success work has also commenced on the 2 storey rear extension and the conversion and renovation of the remainder of the existing building. We hope to see these building works complete by the end of 2018 and the building become equipped to re-open in spring 2019.

Planned open days. Currently we have no planned open days as the building is now closed whilst works continue. We hope to be able to allow access once building works are completed, ahead of the re-opening, and once we are closer to this we may plan an open day for all our supporters and funders.

Get Involved. Our committee of hard working volunteers needs to look to the future and find willing volunteers to help run the building once re-opened. Phase 1: complete.

Following an archaeological survey, work to reconstruct and strengthen the main floor in the large hall began in early June 2013 and was completed in late October 2013. Completion of this phase addressed the main problem that caused the building to close many years ago.

To avoid duplication of work, this phase also included all installations such as heating and electrics in the floor void of the main hall and side hall to allow seamless integration with following phases.

Phase 2: complete.

This phase was to completely renovate and decorate the main hall, adjacent small hall and adjacent 1st floor room  which all interlink. This included restoring the plasterwork, ceiling coving and cornicing, wall panelling, flooring and balcony, together with installing all the new lighting, electricals and mechanicals which allow integration with future phases. This work has now completed and the results are very good indeed, with the portrait collection now proudly re-hung throughout both halls.

Phase 3 (part complete)

This phase is to renovate much of the ground floor area of the existing building which currently consists of the former flour store, the store used for Mayfair fixtures and fittings, undercroft and other connected spaces. Within this phase we will install the new plant room with all incoming services, a ground floor disabled WC and renovate all the structure and flooring throughout the ground floor, stairwells and former first floor Council Chamber. This phase has now been combined with all remaining phases as funding now allows us to complete the project in full.

Phase 4 (part complete)

This phase is to demolish the old inadequate rear extension and replace it with a much larger modern construction which will house the catering facility on the ground floor and the male/female and disabled toilets on the first floor. Included in this extension is the installation of the lift, together with all the mechanicals and electricals to link this new build into the main property. This phase was part completed in 2017, having demolished the old extension and installed the foundations and services ready to accept the new extension. The remainder of this phase has now been combined with all remaining phases as funding now allows us to complete the project in full.

Phase 5 (part complete)

This was to be the final phase to give this prominent building the street-level entrance and prominence that it needs, but due to funding availability it was decided we should complete as much as possible of this phase ahead of the rear extension and lift, so as we could open the building in part as soon as possible. The former Townlands office space has been knocked-through into the undercroft area, which itself is now fully glazed with double central front entrance doors together with side doors from the existing thoroughfare which will also give level disabled access from the street. The existing bay front to the former Townlands office has been removed and the original arch that's been revealed is now glazed in keeping with the look of the remaining building. This new internal floorspace, once linked to the new extension, will provide a prominent reception area with access points to all parts of the building and space for meetings and refreshments when the remainder of the renovation is complete. Only minor parts of this phase now remian and have been combined with all remianing phases as funding now allows us to complete the project in full.
